Like most people my age, I owe my knowledge of Big Star to Paul Westerberg. I'll insist to anyone who'll listen that "Alex Chilton" is one of the five best pop songs of the eighties.
I lived in Memphis in 1989-1990 and had the opportunity to see Mr. Chilton several times that year, (mostly playing in dive bars, i.e the Antenna Club, where I had to sit on a three legged stool).
If you join us on the Wednesday night ride this year make sure and remind me to tell you the story. I also saw a very drunk Replacements show at Amelia's Deli in Iowa City in 1984. Another fond memory.
He was in the Box Tops?! I had no idea.....
